With my head in my hands & tears flowing through my fingers, somehow I knew I needed to go through the pain of failure.  Let’s face it, cold calling sucks!

From that moment on, I set out on a journey to make sure I NEVER had to face the fear of cold calling another individual that didn’t want to be contacted.  This is where networking on LinkedIn started for me.

Inside this deep blog post, I will share with you the exact process I’ve used since that fateful day to create 50,000 leads, hundreds of thousands of dollars with never making another cold call.  Oh yeah, my networking on LinkedIn scripts are hidden in plain sight!

How To Network On LinkedIn Professionally

Before we jump right into the how-to’s, we need to dive into the mental game of LinkedIn.  How we think about networking on LinkedIn is by far the most important nugget you’ll receive from this entire post.

It’s very simple to teach the how.  I want you to get hooked on the mental piece of the game.  Everything we do here at TheLiveNetworker is based in Generosity.  This means that my objective is to have a mutually beneficial conversation.

In case this is new to you, this simply means that we will both benefit by having a conversation.  I take “sales” out of my mindset.  Stop the madness & lack of care in the marketplace.  Too many folks out there are sales happy & it creates a lack of success.

My goal ALWAYS is 2nd level.  Let me tell you what I mean.  When I am networking on LinkedIn, I always think about the people that my potential prospect knows.  I don’t think about “selling” my first level person.

If you always have your mind set on the 2nd level, you’ll always make the appropriate move.  Through this method, we generate an amazing amount of referrals & a crazy 24% closing percentage.  It works!

Your LinkedIn Profile Is Essential

Before we get into the details of how to network on LinkedIn properly, we need to touch on your LinkedIn profile.  I will not go into the fine print because I have a step-by-step blog post that lays out everything you need to know.  Get it here.

If your LinkedIn profile isn’t optimized correctly, you’ll generate less than desired results.  This is why.

You connect with another individual on LinkedIn.  They head on over to your LinkedIn profile to check you out & see if you’re worthy of connecting with.  They are really seeing if you fit into their priorities & if they will gain value by connecting with you.

Please don’t waste a bunch of time, effort & energy until your LinkedIn profile is complete.  Many people have difficulty with this process & that is why we have examples.  Oh yeah, we can help you too!

Who Is Your Target Market To Network With On LinkedIn

A little word of advice.  The more niche you become the more powerful your brand.  I seriously would like you to write that down.  It’s too dang important.   Be niche, not general.

Let’s Get Started Networking On LinkedIn

Oh yes!  It’s time to get started.  Your LinkedIn Profile is optimized & now you’ve developed a target market strategy to develop your brand on LinkedIn.  It’s time to connect with your target market.

Our first order of business is LinkedIn Search.

You know can either type a keyword inside the search box or just press enter.  It’s up to you & your target market strategy.  In this case, we will simply press enter.

You now have options called “filters” to find your target market prospect.  Before we go further, we want to select people.  After all, you are looking for people, aren’t you.

As a note, if you’d like to search companies, posts, jobs, groups, etc., you can do that here as well.

You want to now select “2nd” under connections.  You’ll want to do this each time you perform a search.  LinkedIn allows you to connect with 2nd connections or connections of your connections.  Any further away in seperation, LinkedIn doesn’t allow you to connect.

Of course, 1st connections are people already connected to you therefore you would want to find them in this search.

You then want to select a location.  Please don’t just choose the USA.  You need to have a strategy here.  How will you ever scale your efforts to create more networking on LinkedIn opportunities?  We always recommend people to start out in their back yard.

If you’d like to select a current company, you can do that as well.  I would get as highly targeted as possible because being niche will always bring a higher level result!

Finding Your Perfect Prospect

To find your perfect prospect by networking on Linkedin, your search should look similar to the above image.  I want you to pay attention to the location & current company.  You don’t have to do this but the more targeted you can be, the better off you’ll be!

Now, let’s get some results.

Now that I’ve got my search executed with all of my potential new prospects & friends, it’s time to connect with them.  All you do from here is click connect on each person & send.

We’ve tested sending a note with the connection request and it doesn’t help at all.  I highly encourage you to simply click send.

You’ll want to space your connections out in 15 second increments.  Yes, actually time yourself.  This protects you from getting restricted.  It’s very important if you want to keep your account.

How many should you send?  This is completely up to your account.  I will say 50 to 100 per day.  Some accounts that are used more often will be able to have more connections.  You’ll have to play this one by ear.

Once a LinkedIn connection has accepted your invitation, you’ll want to start this sequence.  This is where you actually start networking on LinkedIn!

That decision happens within a moment.  It’s a feeling that they have within seconds of looking at your LinkedIn profile.  This is why every step is so crucial. 

Your Profile Picture

The first step is choosing a good LinkedIn profile picture.  LinkedIn is a business network.  You must look professional, confident & open.  I see so many profile pictures that look non-professional.  Don’t make that mistake.

Even worse, look at your picture and make sure you are smiling.  The energy in your LinkedIn profile picture is everything.  Be open & smile so people desire to connect with you.

Have you ever been in a sports bar or establishment when someone walks in the door & instantly you know they are someone to stay away from.  You may even leave the sports bar out the opposite door.  You judgmental awesome person you.

You have to laugh a touch at that & I hope you do.  It’s just so critically important that you understand energy.  We all feel energy from people and we act accordingly if we are smart.  You want your prospects to jump at connecting with you.  Be warm, be open & be someone others love to connect with.

Welcome to the greatest waste of space that I see on most LinkedIn profiles I ever look at.  If you need to scroll up, go ahead.  Look at my background or banner image.  (see many examples here)

Your LinkedIn profile background is NOT a place to advertise how great you or your product is.  Your background image MUST grab the attention of your prospect and tell them if you are the perfect solution to their problem or not.

Contray to what most belief, great branding is meant to be a filter.  It’s meant to push away those people that aren’t absolutely PERFECT for you.  This way, it saves you countless hours of time.

This may be the greatest mistake ever made on LinkedIn.  The reason for you putting together a LinkedIn profile is to get contacted, right?

So many people that I find don’t have their phone number or email listed.  Like seriously folks, do you like business?

Here is my CLEAR opinion.  If you like money to be deposited into your bank account, fill out ALL your contact information MINUS your address.  If you don’t, you are committing suicide to your business.

Everything we’ve spoken about so far has been eye-catching & attraction based.  Your LinkedIn Profile About Section is designed to take your prospect on a journey to see that you are their answer.

You have a massive hurdle to get over 1st but I have some good news.  If your prospect is at this stage, they like you.  They have scrolled down on your LinkedIn profile a few notches.  Study the next picture quickly.

Sorry to burst your bubble but your prospect doesn’t care about you.  They only care about WIIFM.  What’s in it for me.  That line is the only thing your prospect cares about just like you.  

You only have a few words to catch them.  Your desire is to write a story about how their pain can be solved.  Would you click see more above if you were reading my profile?  You have a total of 2,000 characters to create magic for your prospect.  

Make your first sentence catchy to make your prospect click.  Then take them on a journey with a call to action at the end.  What do you want your prospect to do if they love you?  I choose to book an appointment so we can connect on a deeper level.  If you’re not a good writer or really have no idea where to start, we can certainly help.  Go here for more.

The Featured Section

The featured section of your LinkedIn profile

Your featured section is designed to share what is important to your target market.  That dang word has show up again!  You must know what they desire.  You don’t fill this section up just with things to buy.

Think hard about valuable content that your perfect prospect will love.  In my case, my website is by far the best place for anyone who loves what I do.  You can add websites/links, YouTube videos or static images.

I highly encourage you to take advantage of this section.  Up until now, you’ve been building credibility.  It’s now time to get your prospect engaged with your sharpest material.

I would highly advise that you have no more than 4 featured links or images.  To many featured items causes nothing to work.  Your prospect has no idea what to actually focus on.

Your Dashboard Tells The Real Story

I’ve come to realize that marketing is all about testing.  We can talk about theory all day long but the marketplace will always tell us the real story.  We just have to listen.

Your LinkedIn marketing is no different.  This is a picture of my Dashboard on one of my LinkedIn accounts.

This Dashboard tells me everything I need to know.  Make sure you’re tracking the RESULTS, not just the actions.  If you aren’t having other humans viewing your profile, something is wrong.

On the contrary, if you have a lot of people viewing your profile but no action is happening, that’s not good either.  How many search rankings are you showing up in?

These things are how you go faster to make sure your marketing & your LinkedIn Profile is doing what it is suppose to.

I’m not going to take you into the experience category because I think it’s not necessary to point out the obvious.  Fill out your experience & education to the max.  It’s very important.

Generosity in business, does it even matter or should you just sell hard even if it doesn’t feel good?  As we were talking over our weekend plans she told me it was too far to drive for a day but something deep down directed me to go anyways.

For some strange reason, she awoke from sweet dreams an hour before normal.  We had planned on heading north about 1.5 hours to a series of bays on the Sea of Cortez in Baja, Mexico between Loreto & Mulege.

Generosity In Business Has Many Turns

There are 5 bays and numerous other beaches you could drive to.  Which will we stop at?  She had asked me what our plans were & I simply stated to allow the universe to direct our path.

In case you are wondering who the she is, she is my wife, Felicia.  Generosity in business doesn’t only work, it’s the only way.  In this blog as I finish my story, I hope to share with you a different way of looking at business.

We arrived at an incredibly beutiful bay but something inside said, it wasn’t the one.  It just didn’t call me on this day.

The Way is not in the sky; the Way is in the heart.

To me, this means to allow your heart to direct the way.  We call this intuition or a gut feeling.  

The Start Of The Day

Coming around a corner on the edge of a cliff, this campground on came up on our right side.  Immiedately something told me that it was the one.

I said, “Sweets, this is where we will call home to our day off.”

And so, it was.  We stayed on this beach for the rest of the day.  Shortly after setting up camp, our new neighbors came over to say hi.  We learned later her name was Jenie.

What You Didn’t Know

1 month ago as a holiday gift, we decided to order a really nice inflatable kayak from Sea Eagle.  By now you know we are staying in Mexico.  This means it needed to be shipped to Mexico.

Our kayak has been held up at the border.  As Jennie warmly walked on over to our jeep to greet us she said.  “Oh & by the way.  We are heading into town for a bit & you are welcome to use our kayaks.  They are on the other side of our camp.”

You have no idea but Felicia was just speaking about wanting to be out on the water as I muttered “be present” back to her.  The universe had delivered again.

Generosity in business creates an atmoshere to thrive in for your customers.  It’s that intangable feeling that people become addicted to.  They don’t know why it feels so good.  It’s a feeling, not a tangible thing.

Creating The Feeling

What we are all searching for in business is the creation of that feeling.  How can we create a feeling that becomes addicting?  When we first start, it’s all about cashflow.  Most of us would do anything or create anything to make a dime.

Here at TheLiveNetworker, our goal is to make business easy through authentic relationship building or generosity.  You can’t make business easy using solely your head.  It will not work.

Much like my story above.  It we were looking at the map or outside our window for sheer beauty, we never would have found the spot.  We wouldn’t have expierenced the sheer generosity from Jenie & Dan.  We never would have been out on that kayak in the middle of the ocean.

In much the same way, use your head to go to the appoximate destination but let your heart pick the exact path.  Let that feeling inside you take the reins that doesn’t really make sense.  That feeling is called intuition or your gut feeling & is never wrong.

The Generosity Circle

This entire idea of the generosity circle came from an amazing guy, Jay Shetty.  Oh yeah, I highly reccomend his book as well.  Click here to pick it up.

Jay has influenced & deepened my look at business recently.  I didn’t want to take 100% credit for how I think because that would be wrong.

Generosity, love & care are all the same to me.  When most of us send generosity or love to others, we expect the same dose of generosity to come back.

That is just not how the universe set it up.  It’s a culmunation of generosity & love sent that makes all the difference.

Generosity in business is like a boomerang.  The more you send out, the more you will recieve.  The optical allusion is it will almost never come back from the source you game it to… by design.  Otherwise it would be too easy.

One Surefire Way To Create Generosity In Business

If you are still reading this article, it’s obvious you would like to create more generosity in business.  If it is true that love & generosity is like a boomerang, it is my opinion that I will give out as much as I possibly can.

This is what I do.  If I meet you & like you (hahaha), I will send you a card & brownies.  This is no joke.  Ask anyone who has had a call with me.

Financially does this make sense?  Well, I know have numbers to back it up but…  Imagine this for a second.

I meet you & we have a great first conversation.  We talk about you & what you are focused with.  We create another appointment for me to present my business to you.

Before we meet the next time, you receive a nice to meet you card & a sweet treat.  Do you think your “feeling” will be a touch different about me?  Do you think you’ll want to put more people in that “feeling”?

On top of that, your birthday rolls around and you get a card from me with cake bars.  You haven’t spent a dime with me but now you feel cared for & loved.

If you continue to send gratitude & love to prospects & customers, the atmophere around you is irrestible.  People just want to be in it & soak it up.  They want to send referrals your way constantly.

Your Generosity In Business Must Be Authentic

Just remember, your generosity in business must come from a feeling tone of generosity.  It’s not about the card & brownies.  It’s about the energy that it comes with.

Generosity is an action, it’s not a thing that you do.  It comes from the heart much like the quote earlier from Buddha.

Jenie had incredible generosity.  She also understands how the universe works.  The luckiest people in the world are the most generous at a heart level.  Things just happen to them “by chance”.  Except it wasn’t by chance, the boomerang is just coming back.

In Conclusion

There is not a doubt in my mind that Jenie was a boomerang of generosity coming back to us.  Generosity in business isn’t a transaction & those who treat it as such will NEVER get results.

As we were leaving to head home, a car drives up.  The driver gets out and opens his trunk, a normal thing in Mexico.  Knowing he was selling something, I’ve learned to give generous presence to see what they have to offer.

Felicia had been wanting a cinnimon roll, American style, for months.  No joke, we couldn’t find one going to bakery after bakery.  Out on a bay with no cell phone service in the middle of nowhere, it show up.

The next morning, the sugary sweet flavor reminded me of generous outpouring of the universe.  Our job is to tap into it & become a terminal instead of a stop gap.
